A well-known New Delhi-based gynaecologist has been arrested in Canada in connection with a sexual assault investigation.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said Jitender Khatri was taken into custody on Tuesday after Canadian police and forensic examiners presented evidence to a court in Toronto.

The court then formally charged Dr Khatri with sexual assault, sexual interference and voyeurism.

He was detained in Toronto, and is likely to return to New Delhi.

Toronto police have not confirmed the arrest, but CBC says Dr Khatri’s lawyer confirmed the development.

Dr Khatri’s LinkedIn page describes him as a “top local gynaecologist” who specializes in “long-term infertility”.

However, he has denied wrongdoing to the Indian Express newspaper, and has maintained his innocence.

“I don’t see any merit of it,” he told the Indian daily, adding that the Indian media had been fanning the rumours in a bid to tarnish his reputation.

The Indian Express reported that Dr Khatri has been in the country since 2010.

In 2015, he was awarded the M.Sathish Acharya Medical Award, Canada’s highest honour for medical professionals.
